Now, I’m no stranger to a well-stocked sake shop. This particular store, however, caught my eye for its focus on quality Japanese sake while also boasting a surprising selection of shochu and other international delights. Wines, scotches – you name it, they likely had it.
Browsing the shelves, I felt a familiar excitement bubble up. Each bottle held the potential for a delightful discovery, a new flavor adventure waiting to be uncorked. Then, nestled amongst the familiar labels, I spotted something that piqued my curiosity: a bottle with a captivating design that whispered of something exotic.
At the liquor store, I spotted two interesting bottles. One, labeled “bouzouk,” intrigued me with its description of citrus and pepper flavors. The other, positioned to the right, seemed to be a berry-infused option. (Good to know for next time!) Curious about the bouzouk, I asked the shop assistant about its origin. He explained that it comes from vineyards in Southern France, where leftover grapes are used to make a brandy. The process is similar to making gin, but since grapes are the base ingredient, it’s classified as brandy. The transparent color indicates it wasn’t aged in casks, but bottled right after distillation.
Apparently, white brandy is best enjoyed chilled or with soda, much like gin. I tried it on the rocks and was impressed by the vibrant citrus and peppery notes. If I get my hands on another bottle, I’ll definitely try it with soda next time. However, for a pure flavor experience, I recommend having it on the rocks. Sadly, the store was all out of bouzouk by the time I checked for a second bottle. Guess I’ll have to keep an eye out for it next time!
