A Night of Hidden Gems in Takadanobaba: From Retro Izakayas to Korean Snack Bars

Takadanobaba, often overlooked in favor of its flashier neighbor Shinjuku, holds surprising treasures for those willing to explore its winding streets. While strolling down Sakae-dori with colleagues for a year-end party, what initially seemed like a mundane drinking district transformed into an evening of unexpected discoveries. The turning point came with the discovery of a retro izakaya, its red lantern glowing like a beacon from Japan’s Showa era. Despite initial rejection due to the packed interior, patience rewarded us with a small table in this time capsule of a restaurant.

The authenticity of this hidden gem was striking – from the aged cooking equipment to the nostalgically priced menu items. The chef’s skilled fish preparation behind the counter, combined with the homestyle cooking and extensive sake selection, created an atmosphere increasingly rare in modern Tokyo. What made the experience even more remarkable was the reasonable pricing, a refreshing change from the standard cover charges and inflated prices of Shinjuku’s establishments.

The night’s exploration continued across the station, where we discovered a sophisticated bar with surprisingly affordable drinks – a mere 1,100 yen for two Heartland beers. The evening concluded at “Daisy,” a Korean snack bar with an excellent bottle keep system, typically ranging from 4,000 to 5,000 yen for standard spirits. Takadanobaba’s charm lies in these scattered gems that maintain their authentic character while offering reasonable prices. However, finding these spots requires careful research, as the best establishments aren’t immediately apparent to casual visitors. The area rewards those willing to dig deeper and venture beyond the main streets.
