The turning point came with the discovery of a retro izakaya, its red lantern glowing like a beacon from Japan’s Showa era. Despite initial rejection due to the packed interior, patience rewarded us with a small table in this time capsule of a restaurant.
The authenticity of this hidden gem was striking – from the aged cooking equipment to the nostalgically priced menu items. The chef’s skilled fish preparation behind the counter, combined with the homestyle cooking and extensive sake selection, created an atmosphere increasingly rare in modern Tokyo.
