Exploring the Hidden Warmth of Hachiman, Blue Hips and Moon, in Morioka!

Tucked away from Morioka’s bustling central district lies Hachiman, a neighborhood brimming with charm, history, and nostalgia. Once a vibrant nightlife hotspot, Hachiman now enjoys a quieter pace, attracting those who seek authentic, down-to-earth experiences. Walking through its streets feels like a step back in time, with its serene ambiance inviting you to slow down and savor the moment. Inside one of its hidden bars, the soft glow of lights, an inviting shochu bottle adorned with intricate patterns, and the warmth of the surroundings set the tone for an unforgettable evening.

The bar itself is an intimate mix of Japanese tradition and quirky modern charm. A standout feature is a vibrant dekotora-themed installation—a neon masterpiece reminiscent of Japan’s legendary decorated trucks. It contrasts beautifully with the shelves stocked with an array of locally distilled spirits, each bottle telling its own story. This juxtaposition of past and present creates a unique ambiance that speaks to Hachiman’s identity—a place where history and playfulness converge effortlessly.

What truly sets this district apart are the people. The bar owner’s friendliness and the welcoming locals create an atmosphere that’s warm and inviting. Many patrons are older residents who fondly remember Hachiman’s golden days and bring their memories to life through stories, laughter, and a shared love of the area. As the night unfolds, you’ll hear Morioka’s unique dialects and feel deeply connected to its culture. Beyond the nostalgic charm, Hachiman offers exceptional affordability, with drinks and meals priced more reasonably than the central district, making it an even more compelling destination.

If you’re looking to escape the usual tourist trails and experience the heart of Morioka, Hachiman is a must-visit. During my visit, I stopped by two incredible karaoke-style bars. The first, Blue Hips, had a cozy yet stylish vibe and served exceptional shochu—its signature bottle proudly displaying an intricate design labeled “Japan.” The second bar, 夢羽雲 (MOON), featured a vibrant dekotora-inspired decoration that brought a playful energy to its relaxed and nostalgic ambiance. Both spots offered not just drinks and karaoke but also genuine connections with the locals.
